INTERNAL BOUNDARIES

I was having an insightful conversation with a friend who opened up about his struggles with setting boundaries, particularly when it comes to one of his immediate family members. He shared that ever since his mother passed away, he felt a heavy weight on his shoulders—almost as if he was expected to carry the family dynamics on his own. He took on the roles of peacemaker and financial provider, trying to mend relationships and support everyone emotionally and financially.

As he spoke, I could sense the emotional strain he was experiencing. It was clear that this responsibility was taking a toll on his mental well-being, and I knew I needed to choose my words carefully. After a moment of reflection, I replied thoughtfully, “You need to work on your internal boundaries. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to say no when you need to. Your desire to help others is admirable, but setting these boundaries is essential. By doing so, you not only take care of your own well-being but also give them the opportunity to take responsibility for their own actions and situations.” This approach can empower both you and them, fostering healthier relationships moving forward.
