WHO AM I

While sitting at my laptop, I came across a poem I wrote for our July family reunion in Alabama. It was a wonderful event, with family members coming from as far as Texas to join in the festivities. As I looked around, I couldn't help but notice the similarities we all shared, from the roundness of our faces to the intricacies of our skin tones. But the one thing that binds us all together is our DNA.

These observations made me question my identity and I began to wonder, who am I? My name and place of origin were not enough to answer this question. I had to dig deeper into my roots and explore the lineage that led to my existence. I realized that I am just one of many seeds that my ancestors had to sow for us all to flourish. I am a descendant of those who fought and witnessed unspeakable tragedy and triumph. I am also a descendant of royalty, who helped build this country.

I am the go-getter, the dream-maker, and the storyteller. I defy my naysayers. I am all I put my mind to be as I remember those who came before me and those who will follow me. I say be all that you can be. I am so proud to be a part of the harvest and to welcome the next generation that will derive from this fertile soil.
